Kaaleb, Tuck, Joey and Jaro Running the Fort Erie Friendship Trail; March 22, 2007

   Welcome to CHC Sleddog Supply!

I began running dogs under harness over a decade ago. What began as an insane idea to run a longer trapline on virtually no money led me to hook four rottweilers in hand-stitched harnesses made of 2" nylon seatbelt strap in front of a sled made of wooden skis and lawnmower handles. Thank God there are no pictures from those days!

In the beginning, I knew so little about dogsledding it's a wonder we ever got anywhere and a miracle we didn't drown in Black Creek or suffer some kind of serious head trauma from all the trees that jumped out and attacked us. With a lot of trial and error - and incessantly picking the brains of various mushers, near and abroad - I assembled a reasonable breeding program, an appropriate working/rec team, and superior equipment.

Still, having grown up on a farm where money was always tight and often absent, paying others to manufacture anything less technologically sophisticated than a toaster oven was inconceivable (not to mention a slight against some distant Scottish forbear). So, aside from a couple harnesses and a little basket sled made by veteran musher Doug McNeil - formerly of Chatmac - I learned to manufacture all of my own equipment, exacting rugged and professional standards by sheer virtue of necessity. I also learned to wheel and deal enormous industrial sewing machines because handstitching poly webbing is about as fun as a case of herpes.

So, here is some of what I make. I'll be adding more to these pages soon. And bear in mind that I'm in the process of timberframing a new addition to the carriage shop, so eventually I'll get the steamer set up again, and in spring, the sawmill, so I'll get some more sleds up for sale soon.
